Is there an age limit to be seen by our affiliated doctors?

MCRCI does not have a minimum age requirement for our patients. Patients under 18 years of age will require parental consent and a different appointment protocol. Please give us a call if you would like more information.

Is there an expiry date on the ACMPR authorization to possess marijuana?

ACMPR authorizations can be valid for a maximum of twelve months (1 year) from the date they are issued. MCRCI will contact patients 1 month prior to their expiration date and book an appointment for renewal. If you are registered with Health Canada and have a personal production license, it is a good idea to contact MCRCI and schedule your renewal appointment 6-8 weeks prior to your expiry.

What amount of marijuana will the doctor authorize for me?

The dosage is determined by the physician. During your consultation with the doctor,
they will decide what is the best dosage for your treatment. In some cases, even if
you qualify under Health Canada’s guidelines, our affiliated doctors have the right to
use their discretion and may choose not to sign the ACMPR Medical Document.

What is the ACMPR?

The Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR) is a federal program Health Canada has created to allow patients safe access to medicinal cannabis. There are about 35+ different Licensed Producers across Canada which are companies qualified by Health Canada to produce and provide medical cannabis, they each require a “Medical Document” signed by a Medical Doctor (MD) to register a patient. A patient would then be able to purchase their cannabis through mail order from one of these licensed producers (LP). Under the ACMPR you are also able to produce your own cannabis or designate someone to produce cannabis on your behalf. If you are unable to find a supportive physician MCRCI may be able to provide access.

What was the MMAR?

Prior to the new rules, the MMAR outlined a system for doctors, patients and non-commercial growers. The MMAR allowed patients to grow for themselves or designate an individual to grow for them. Health Canada was the only source of medical marijuana for patients that wished to purchase it.

The MMPR was Health Canada’s first attempt at a commercial industry for medical marijuana. The MMPR replaces the previous rules of the MMAR (Marijuana Medical Access Regulations), which were officially repealed on March 31, 2014. The MMPR has now been replaced by current program, the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR).

What conditions can marijuana be prescribed for?

The ACMPR allows medical marijuana to be recommended as a treatment for any condition, there are no official guidelines on its use for specific conditions. Under the old program, conditions were split into categories and patients with certain conditions were required to obtain support from multiple doctors.

How do I register with a Licensed Producer?

After obtaining a medical document, patients can register with a Licensed Producer of their choice. The registration process is different for each Licensed Producer, but typically involves submitting a registration form and validating the medical document. MCRCI’s aftercare team can submit and verify your medical document within 24 hours of your appointment with our doctor.

Can I sign up with more than one Licensed Producer?

Yes, patients are permitted to register with more than one Licensed Producer, but a separate medical document must be submitted for each, meaning that a doctor will issue multiple medical documents and split the daily amount of marijuana between them.

How do I become a Licensed Producer?

Becoming a Licensed Producer involves applying through Health Canada. It is an expensive and time-consuming process, since the rules for growing and selling medical marijuana are strict and require a sizeable investment. Health Canada predicts the ACMPR will generate roughly $1.3 billion in yearly sales by 2024. Likewise, the industry has already become very competitive. Since last summer, Health Canada has received over 600 applications from hopeful Licensed Producers.

If my doctor is willing to fill out a Referral Form, why do I need to see a doctor at MCRCI?

A referral completed by your doctor allows you to see a physician at MCRCI to obtain
authorization under the ACMPR. MCRCI’s physicians have experience and knowledge
in cannabis as a medicine. The staff at MCRCI specialize in cannabis education and
have extensive knowledge in Health Canada’s federal program (ACMPR) and is
available Monday-Friday to assist with any patient needs.
